It is vital for a business owner to have a budget, along with other benchmarks, in place so they can compare their financial performance to a baseline. Forecasting is equally important as it allows owners to play out scenarios in order to make an effective business decision.
Whether it is budgeting or forecasting, historical data is crucial so you have a foundation for which you can base your assumptions. Proper bookkeeping and Key Performance Indicator tracking give owners that ability. The more data gathered & stored, the more accurate your projections should be.
Collecting data at the time of transaction (which is often sacrificed due to time savings) can lead to very effective budgeting and forecasting models. A little time on the front end can lead to maximized benefits on the back end. Things like having an up-to-date vendor, customer and product/service list are all foundational inputs that are fed into your budgeting and forecasting processes. Many business owners will not properly set up these reporting systems which often leaves them in the dark.
